Mice are a common pest issue that most homes deal with at some point or another. Many homes can have mice coming and going from them with the residents never even knowing. Deer mice typically come into a home and can use the attic as shelter for the winter and the homeowner may never know they are there. The other most common type of mouse is the gray house mouse. This is the mouse that results in a homeowner having to call a professional to come and take care of. The house mouse is a communal rodent that lives in family groups of 2-5 individuals. Once they have a good food source, like your pantry, they can reproduce at a high rate. One female mouse can produce up to 48 more mice in a year’s time. With this high rate of reproduction you can see how they would become a problem quickly.
There are several things you can do to limit the probability of mice taking up residence in your home. The first and probably the most important is to do some light exclusion. Sealing any cracks or gaps, making sure there are good screens on crawl space vents (if your home has a crawlspace), and having good weather stripping on exterior doors are great places to start. Mice can enter the home or other space through a ¼ in gap so even the smallest entry should be sealed. To be clear, holes and gaps can be sealed, but a home can’t be totally “mouse proofed”. The next best thing to reduce mice is to reduce vegetation very near and touching the home. If you can’t see under a bush or if there is thick ivey next to the foundation, this should be trimmed. Also trees and other tall plants that are touching the structure should be trimmed back several feet so mice won’t use it as a “bridge” onto the house. The final task to reduce mice is to have any kind of pantry foods, pet food, or bird seed placed in a sealed container. If they don’t have access to a food source it will make your home much less attractive.
